Do NASA Science Live: What’s the Weather Like on Mars?

April 2 @ 2:00 PM 4:00 PM

Teens and Adults. Join us onsite to watch this livestreamed event about the crowd-sourced science project “ Cloudspotting on Mars .” Just watch and learn about the project from the primary investigator or roll up your sleeves and try it out! (There’s a prize for the participant who contributes the most to the project!) Learn how looking at satellite images can help NASA scientists. Library staff will provide onsite assistance.

Clouds are a common feature in the atmosphere of Mars. Studying these clouds is important because they influence climate by reflecting sunlight (cooling the planet) and trapping infrared radiation (warming it). Scientists believe clouds may have helped keep early Mars warm enough for liquid water to flow across its surface. Today, because of the planet’s cold temperatures and low pressure, Martian clouds are made of water-ice or carbon-dioxide ice, and instruments like the Mars Climate Sounder on the Reconnaissance Orbiter are used to map high-altitude clouds to better understand how they form. The NASA-partnered scientists who work on this research need our help with all the data they’ve gathered!

This is part of our America 250! program. Participants will be entered into the America 250 raffle, as well as receive other giveaways and the chance for a prize for the most Acts of Science achieved! Funding for this program is provided by an Acts of Science: Connected Event Support Grant from SciStarter.

Registration is required before 9:00 a.m. on April 2. Lack of registration cancels the program.
